What is Direct Primary Care?

Apex Direct Care offers direct primary care in the Flathead Valley. • We provide all of your primary care with no co-pays or extra costs*
  • If you have insurance, use it as normal for everything except the monthly membership fee

Dr. Berkram

Kelly Berkram, M.D. is a board certified Family Medicine doctor with ~20 years of experience.  She graduated from Helena High School, Montana State University in Bozeman, and then University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.  She and her husband, Paul, moved to Indiana for residency where Kelly learned full spectrum family medicine in Muncie, Indiana. They also spent two months doing rotations in Kenya, Africa. After residency they returned to Montana and chose Kalispell as their home. Paul works as a hospitalist at Logan Health, and they are raising three busy children. In their spare time they enjoy many activities with extended family, time at the lake, and travel.

Dr. Berkram's favorite part of family medicine is the connection she has with patients of all ages.  She is known as an empathetic listener who blends her medical knowledge with patient autonomy to help patients make decisions that are best for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is direct primary care (DPC)?

Direct primary care (DPC) is a healthcare model where patients pay a flat monthly fee directly to their primary care physician, bypassing traditional insurance. This arrangement allows for extended appointment times, easier access to doctors, and a more personalized care experience. DPC aims to improve the doctor-patient relationship by reducing administrative costs and barriers to access.

  • Does Dr. Berkram take insurance?

No. By removing this third party barrier, Dr Berkram will work directly for YOU and your health.  Insurance companies involving themselves in primary care adds red tape for both the doctor and patients.

  • Should I still have health insurance if I have a DPC membership?

Ideally, yes.  You can use your health insurance for imaging (x-rays, CT scans, etc), labs, medications, ER visits for life threatening emergencies, and if you are admitted to the hospital.

  • How does DPC benefit someone who is generally healthy and rarely goes to the doctor?

Your DPC doctor is already on your team before illness strikes, helping to prevent disease and treat early when possible.  Health problems can arise without warning.   With DPC your doctor is available promptly when problems arise.  She is also available to answer questions that come up randomly and can be answered without you having to make an appointment.

  • What type of patient does Dr. Berkram treat?

    • Anyone who feels DPC is a good fit for them
    • Ages: birth to 100+.  Her oldest patient so far lived to 106!
    • All gender identities.  Apex Direct Care is a safe space to be yourself.
  • What if I'm still not sure if DPC is right for me?

Contact Dr Berkram for a free meet and greet and see if you are a good fit for each other.  **No medical advice will be given during this visit. **

Dr. Kelly Berkram was my wife's doctor for several years.  My wife was a RN who suffered through many things including pancreatic cancer which claimed her life in 2020.  She said she would not see a doctor she did not believe in, so Dr Berkram was the last doctor she ever saw because she believed in her.

Dr Berkram was very professional and thorough in her work at all levels.  She has a calming presence to her and combined with a work ethic that exceeds anything I have experienced from other doctors. Before my bride passed she talked me into seeing Dr Berkram for my first physical in 43 years.  I did not like doctors because I felt most were in it for other reasons.

After my bride passed, I have continued to use Dr Berkram as my choice of doctors because I believe in her compassion, ethics, skill, and caring for her patients.  I will never have another doctor and I am so glad she chose this profession.

She not only is a great doctor but a great person.  Nobody could care more for her patients than Dr. Berkram. We are blessed to have a doctor of her skill level here in the Flathead Valley.  I am grateful she is my doctor.
